Hidden Gem…

Tucked in the back corners of the Santa Cruz Mountains lies a hidden gem. I discovered it years ago and decided to promote it last year to help keep it from getting extinct: Shakespeare Santa Cruz. They almost had to close doors last year, because people unemployed and recession plagued couldn’t afford to buy tickets. Since my son, then 13, had been reading Midsummer Night’s Dream in 8th grade at Mount Madonna School; I thought it would be appropriate to drag a number of 8th graders and their parents to see Shakespeare Santa Cruz perform Midsummer Night’s Dream. Even their teacher despite having seen dozens of Midsummer Night’s Dream performances over the years decided to join us. This year, I decided to try again. I put out the word and we now have 27 tickets for Love’s Labor’s Lost, a rarely performed Shakespeare comedy. I am thrilled about the response from people in my circle. And even more excited am I that the day after I had purchased the tickets, the Wall Street Journal published an article about specifically this production. How affirming is that? I suspect I wouldn’t be able to get 27 tickets now. What hidden gem will you discover, support and lift out of the ashes this year?
