Doors present choices…

Have you ever thought about the significance of doors? Doors separate two worlds from each other. When entering through a doorway, you are entering into a new environment, sometimes familiar and comforting, and sometimes new and unknown. Either way, a door marks a change. We anticipate what we expect to find beyond the doorway before entering, but we really don’t know. As we are embarking on our annual Renewal and Reflection Retreat in the South of France, the symbolism isn’t lost on me. Every day, in fact several times a day, we think we know what will happen, and yet we really don’t. To not be stressed by this uncertainty, we need to be in the moment and go with the flow. We practice this all week, by not being attached to agendas or times, by matching the desires of the group with what is practical and feasible. As guides, we don’t know what will happen and what lies behind each door. Sometimes we find a door, open it and quickly close it again. We move to a different room. Sometimes we linger and marvel at what we found. I love the fact that we have a choice. It is up to us individually, and collectively, which doors we want to open and which ones we want to walk past. Which doors will you open today? Which ones will you walk by and choose not to open?
